Entry Requirements
Candidates can qualify for the CIA program through one of the following pathways:- Educational Qualification:

- Be an active student with an approved Internal Audit Education Partnership (IAEP) school (Certification will only be awarded upon degree completion).

Acceptable Documents:
- Copy of degree or official transcripts (If your name has changed, include legal name change documents).
- Letter from the university confirming the degree.
- Letter from evaluation services confirming the degree level.
Exit Requirements
To successfully complete the CIA program, candidates must fulfill the following:
- Pass All Three CIA Exam Parts:
- Part 1: Essentials of Internal Auditing.
- Part 2: Practice of Internal Auditing.
- Part 3: Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing.
- Meet Work Experience Requirements:
- Based on the entry qualification, the work experience requirement varies:
- Master’s Degree: 1 year of internal audit experience or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s Degree: 2 years of internal audit experience or equivalent.
- Active Internal Audit Practitioner Designation: 5 years of internal audit experience or equivalent.

- At least two of the five required years of experience must be within the past three years.

Validity and Renewal of the CIA certificate

Certification Validity & Annual Renewal
- The CIA certification is valid for one year and must be renewed annually by December 31.
- To renew your certification, you must complete 40 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) each year, including 2 hours of ethics training.
- Renewal of the certification is done through the Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS) by selecting the “Renew” option and following the instructions.
Certification Status Categories
Your certification status can be classified under three categories based on your renewal status:
- Active Status:
- If your certification is active, you must renew it annually by December 31 after fulfilling your CPE requirements.
- With Active status, you can use the CIA designation after your name and enjoy all the benefits of being a Certified Internal Auditor.
- Grace Status:
- If you miss the renewal deadline, your status will change from Active to Grace for a 12-month period.
- During the Grace period, your certification is inactive, and you cannot use the CIA designation.
- To restore Active status, you must complete the renewal process for the current and previous year’s CPE requirements through the CCMS.
- Revoked Status:
- If you do not renew your certification for three consecutive years, your status will be changed to Revoked.
- To regain certification, you must reapply, retake all required exams, and pay the applicable fees.
- Until your certification is reinstated, you cannot use the CIA designation or enjoy the benefits of certification.
Renewal Process
- Certification renewal opens on October 1 each year, so you do not have to wait until December 31 to complete your renewal.
- Log into the CCMS, select “Renew,” and follow the steps to submit your renewal.
- For those in Grace status, select “Renew Prior Year” or “Renew Current and Prior Year” to restore your certification.
- If your status is Revoked, choose “Recertify” and follow the instructions to begin the reapplication process.
Fees & Requirements
- The annual renewal fee varies based on your location, membership status, and the certification you hold.
